Intent Statement

Design and Technology Vision Statement 2022-23
Our whole curriculum at Broughton C of E Primary School is built around our love of books and our English reading scheme. The design and technology curriculum has been planned to enhance children’s learning around these books/topics/themes while providing rich opportunities for children to meet, and indeed exceed, National Curriculum objectives and expectations.

Intent
Our vision to motivate, inspire and foster a deeper love for design and technology is interwoven with our school mission statement here at Broughton. In a rapidly advancing technological world, we aim to provide our children with the building blocks of high-quality skills and knowledge which they can use and apply not just in school but in their daily lives and potential future careers.

Implementation
We constantly strive to deliver high quality learning opportunities in design and technology for our children, where knowledge and skills are built upon as the children progress through each phase. Design and technology is now being taught in alternating blocks with art and design, with three units of each being taught every year, six across our two-year rolling program. Each discipline (electrical systems, mechanical systems, structures, textiles and food) is taught once during each phase. Each unit of learning begins with a vocabulary exercise. This enables the children to recall the prior knowledge from previous units and allows the teacher to assess understanding before beginning. Knowledge and skills are built upon not only from phase to phase but also from lesson to lesson within any one unit. At the end of each unit, children complete a short self-assessment and reflection activity to identify any gaps and celebrate achievements in learning.
Amidst the focus on the more creative and ‘hands-on’ subjects nationally, we have developed a whole school approach to design and technology which ensures a shared vision and progression of key knowledge and skills from EYFS through to Year 6. Design and technology provides children with the opportunity to problem-solve and link their learning and ideas to the real world. Design and technology has been planned carefully by the subject lead to ensure full and comprehension coverage of appropriate skills and knowledge.
Our specially dedicated creative space ‘The Studio’ enables children, and staff, to enjoy design and technology in a much more spacious and suitable environment.

Impact
The overall aim of our design and technology curriculum is to ensure that our children leave primary school having experienced the disciplines mentioned above in as many different forms as possible, clear in their knowledge of key figures and important events, and skilled in many of the disciplines with a clear understanding of their preferences, strengths, likes and dislikes. We aim to ensure our children leave in Year 6 understanding that design and technology has the potential to provide solutions to questions and issues faced by us all and to understand that any, and all, of its disciplines would be a viable and rewarding career choice.
