Bob Alexander Memorial Triathlon
Bad luck at the Triathlon for our Super Six!
On Monday 25th November, we were looking to retain our trophy and bring it back home to Broughton! We sent an extremely strong team - one very capable of doing so. But, as always at this time of year, injuries and illnesses hit hard and J. Stirrup was unable to attend. F. H. Delaney was a ready-made replacement and was able to fill Jack's boots.
The team had put in some great practice and warmed up ready for the competition to begin. First up was the bench twist - a great start with some brilliant individual scores. But, as luck would have it, a member of the team fell ill and was unable to compete in the rest of the events. This did not deter the other members, and they continued to impress in the gym events, outscoring any other school in the speed bounce.
We then progressed on to the swimming relay and, because of our unfortunate situation,
Alex stepped up and complete two lengths of the pool instead of one, counting for our missing member. Not only that, the girls then showed true grit and desire to achieve, running an outstanding 12 laps each, whilst everyone else only did 8!
Unfortunately, all this effort would count for nothing, as the rules do state that all 6 athletes must complete each event – meaning we were going to come home empty handed. Needless to say, this did not phase our children, as they knew they had given it their all.
Mr. B’s comments: “I was so impressed with both Olivia and Alex’s attitude when Eva had to go home ill. They showed true grit and I cannot fault their efforts at all. The boys were amazing in every aspect and I couldn’t be prouder. Even at the end, the team made sure that they didn’t forget our fallen competitor – it just shows what lovely children we have.
It is just a shame that we were punished on a technicality – let’s just hope that there are no sickness bugs going around this time next year! Thank you to all the parents who came to support us – without you, we couldn’t do these types of events. On to the next one!”
