What a season awaits our superstar girls!|
The Girls Football team are on fire this season. They have played 3 matches so far, they have scored 20, yes 20 and only conceded 1.
Friday 14th September - Friendly vs St Andrew's
Result: Broughton 5 - 1 St Andrew's (Cutting 3, Smart 1, Rawson 1)
An amazing team performance, led by Elise Rawson and Captain Bayla Smart, the girls scored five quality goals and showed signs of real promise with the style of passing football we are trying to play.
Wednesday 26th September - League Match vs St Ignatius
Result: Broughton 8 - 0 St Ignatius (Cutting 3, Rawson 3, Latham 1, Rankin 1)
As you can see, a truly tremendous result. What was more pleasing was the performance of each player and the team as a whole. Passing the ball crisply, getting into great space and just working tirelessly from the first whistle to the very last! Annabel Cutting deserving of a special mention her striking prowess is growing from match to match and I anticipate she will score lots and lots of goals.
Wednesday 3rd October - Friendly vs St Maria Goretti
Result: Broughton 7 - 0 St Maria Goretti (Cutting 3, Smart 3, Rawson 1)
At this point, I am finding myself lost for words. This game is the best football any girls' football team at Broughton has ever played. Wonderful quality with the passing, excellent movement off the ball, great communication and superb finishing. Lots of goals being scored by the weaker foot. However, Bayla Smart (Captain) deserves a special mention. She put in such a majestic and powerful performance. Driving from the heart of midfield, creating lots of attacks and showing off her amazing ability to strike the ball so sweetly with some deadly shooting/finishing. Another great team performance.
Mr. Bird's thoughts: Girls, you have been amazing so far and you are amazing no matter what. The result is irrelevant, it is the standard of football you are playing. I challenge any team in Preston to match this. As a result, the results will come but all that matters is that you keep playing with a smile on your face :-). Well done to: Bethan Sloan (GK), Bayla-Rose Smart (Capt), Annabel Cutting, Elise Rawson, Olivia Rankin, Alex Latham, Olivia Newman-Kirk, Eva Hughes and Darcy Hawthorne. #legends.
League Matches vs St Andrew's and Queens Drive at Corpus and home - 16th Oct and 6th March|
Wednesday 16th October was the day we played St Andrew's in the league at Corpus Christi High School. We were playing on the 3G pitch there, but it was incredibly narrow and tight. Our girls were used to playing in the space and creating width. The pitch was long and the game was tight. However, the girls dug really deep and thanks to Annabel Cutting's strike won the game 1-0.
Wednesday 6th March we had a league match at home vs Queens Drive. The girls were so determined for this one and they knew Queens Drive were in the other semi final, so wanted to make a statement. That they did. A slight shift around in position led to the girls' putting in the best performance of the season. Shot after shot, attack after attack and as a result, they could not get out of their own half for the whole game. Bethan didn't have one save to make. We won the game 4-0. Goals from Bayla Smart 2, Elise Rawson 1 and Annabel Cutting 1.
I'm so proud of all the girls, bring on the final.
Dick Kerr Ladies Cup Semi Final Match vs OLSE - 12th March|
Terrific Trio send Broughton into the final!
Tuesday 12th March was the biggest match of the season for the Girls’ Football team. They were in the Semi-Final of the Dick Kerr Ladies’ Cup for Under 11 Girls in Preston, for the second year in a row. Last year, we demolished St Joseph's 5-0. The team’s preparations had been slightly hampered the week before as the weather was just too wet for us to do any training. Even though the weather wasn’t great, the spirits were certainly not dampened. Myself and Mr Smart (girls' assistant coach) had been going over the field at lunch with a fork and spreading sand to speed up the draining.
The girls' were fired up and ready to rock and roll. On top of all that, the girls went into this match undefeated for the whole season and only conceded 1 goal out of 7 competitive matches on the grass. Plus, Mr Smart was fired up and determined for the girls to get to that final once again :-).
Broughton picked up where they left off from the whole season, attack after attack, solid in defence and passing with real accuracy and confidence. Our Lady's were strong in the tackle and organised, but could not get into the Broughton half. However, 10 minutes went by with 4 or 5 great chances and Broughton could not score. It was starting to get a penalty feel about the game, which we needed to avoid. Then, 'cometh the hour, cometh the girl: Bayla-Rose Smart, leading from the front as usual. She burst beyond the last defender and slotted past the onrushing goalkeeper into the bottom right hand corner. Advantage Broughton thanks to Bombshell Bayla! :-). It was 1-0 at half time. Mr. Bird and Mr. Smart urged the girls to start fast in the second half and get that second goal. They didn't have to wait long. Exactly 2 minutes in, Olivia Rankin picked up the ball on the left wing, dribbled past two defenders, pass to Bayla who slid it across the box to Annabel Cutting who smashed it first time into the corner through the keepers' legs. 2-0 and Broughton were cruising. The game then became scrappy, however Alex Latham and Eva Hughes at the back were rock solid. Sweeping up every counter attack, tackling everyone and everything in sight and passing forwards brilliantly. Olivia-Newman Kirk came on to replace Olivia Rankin and gave some really nice inside passes on the counter attack. Finally, up stepped Elise Rawson. Bayla Smart swung a wicked, dipping corner to the back post and in flew Elise and smashed the ball into the top corner, what a goal to finish a great game for the Broughton girls. 3-0 winners overall and now in the final at PNE (hopefully!). Bayla Smart, Annabel Cutting and Elise Rawson make up the Terrific Trio, who have grown stronger over the last 6 years.
Mr. Bird's Comments: What a performance. The complete performance for me, dominating possession, lots of goals against a strong team and amazing shape, structure and tackling making us virtually impossible to beat. I'm so proud of the girls and in my last year I will be so proud and emotional to lead the girls in the final, with the fantastic Mr Smart, who has been amazing for our team this season. Cheers sir.
